The only sandstone buildings in Yellowstone Park are “Fort Yellowstone” in Mammoth.
Scottish stonemasons were hired to build these buildings in the earliest 1900’s.
They were built for the US Army which ran the park back then.
They quarried this sandstone from the Cretaceous Colorado Group just downhill (north) from Mammoth. It’s hard to even recognize the original quarry site now.
This sandstone has held up well for more than 100 years in a pretty difficult environment.
This is what a geologists would call classic “salt and pepper sandstone” from the Rocky Mountain region.
